It is imperative that Catholics understand that the Church is not opposed to stem cell research if it is done ethically, i.e., if embryos are neither created nor destroyed for that research. For more information, we have prepared a brochure, Stem Cells and Cloning, available in both English and Spanish. (The brochure is letter-sized, 3-fold, to be printed front/back.) Parish sponsored public forums on issues and/or with candidates for elected public office are valuable to assist our Catholic people and the community at large, to more fully and responsibly participate in the democratic process. The CCC has prepared a brochure entitled Guidelines for Candidates' Forums that can be used to plan and execute such a forum. (The brochure is letter-sized, 3-fold, to be printed front/back.) The Guidelines for Pastors and Parishes on Advocacy and Political Action is available in both English and Spanish. (The brochure is legal-sized, 4-fold, to be printed front/back.) Following each General election, the California Catholic Conference prepares a Legislative Directory which lists California's elected constitutional officers; the California Congressional delegation, including the two U.S. Senators; the state Assembly members; and the state Senators. The legislators are listed in alphabetical order with their district number at the far left. In addition, their district office (local) addresses and phone numbers are included. (The brochure is legal-sized, 4-fold, to be printed front/back.) Legislative Priorities of the California Catholic Conference not only lists the priorities, but gives interesting statistics about California Catholics, the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, and names of staff and officers. (The brochure is in color, legal-sized, 4-fold, to be printed front/back.) How to Lobby, particularly useful for those attending Catholic Lobby Day, is available in both English and Spanish. (The brochure is letter-sized, may be printed either front only or front/back.) A one page document, "How a Bill becomes a Law," is available in PDF format in English and Spanish. |
