A Call to Action for Southwest Fresno Community

June 5, 2017

Last Saturday, West Fresno residents came together in unity to honor and mourn the violent death of Kayla Foster. Kayla was a Senior at Central East High School. On Memorial Day weekend four years ago, her brother Sonny Foster was also shot and killed. The Prayer Vigil was a unifying moment for families and community members to remember loved ones while also identifying solutions and calling the community to action.

The Call for Action presented by Faith in the Valley at the vigil includes:

  • Fresno Unified School District to commit more funding to education and afterschool programs in Southwest Fresno.
  • Fresno Police Department to have a non-threatening presence in the community and fund outreach/rehabilitation programs for known gang members.
  • City of Fresno to invest in youth and young adults by creating jobs and improving Parks and Recreation in the area.
  • Community members and clergy to join the movement to reduce violence and poverty by investing in our children.
