California Elected Officials Now Believe They Can Define Genders

California Catholic Conference Executive Director Edward ‘Ned’ Dolejsi issued the following statement in regard to the signing of SB 179 (Atkins, D-San Diego), a bill that would create a third gender on official California documents:

“Incredibly, the elected officials of the State of California, including Gov. Brown, now believe the State can define an entirely new gender classification – “non-binary” – for people who do not want to be classified as either male or female.

“The wonderful complexity of the human person is not something that can be haphazardly reclassified by elected officials.  For those struggling with gender identity, we offer our support and sympathy but the attempt to create a new gender classification goes beyond the authority of legislative action.  Good public policy would appreciate the nuances that medical and psychological experts are exploring about gender issues and not rely on the individual desires of one person.”
