Catholic Advocacy Day Is April 25, 2017

April 11, 2017

Delegates from dioceses across California are gathering in Sacramento on April 25 for Catholic Advocacy Day 2017. They will learn about the issues in their own dioceses; then meet with elected representatives as a voice for life and dignity at the state Capitol.

Three restorative justice bills supported by the California Catholic Conference will be part of this day of advocacy.

  • AB 1029: Comprehensive School Safety Plans (Weber, D- San Diego) – adds a restorative justice practitioner, community schools coordinator, and/or a mental health professional to the schools safety planning committee.
  • AB 683: Prisoner Support Services (E.Garcia, D-Coachella) – implements pilot programs in counties (Alameda, Los Angeles, Monterey, Riverside and Santa Clara) to provide reentry services and support to persons who are, or who are scheduled to be released from a county jail.
  • AB 1448: Elderly Parole Program (Weber, D-San Diego) – codifies the existing Elderly Parole Program that allows inmates who are 60 years of age and older, and who have been incarcerated for at least 25 years on their current sentence, to be reviewed by the Board of Parole Hearings (BPH) under the elder parole review guidelines.
