An Interfaith Prayer for Peace event was cohosted by the Diocese of Oakland and Community of Sant’Egidio at The Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland. Nearly 800 people gathered to address the problem of violent crime by bowing their heads in prayer. Oakland City Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan, who was part of the gathering, said, "Fighting crime takes more than prayers, but the unity of the community to build a peaceful future is an important contributing factor." The evening culminated with reading of an Appeal for Mercy read and signed by leaders from five different faith traditions.
